Puerto Iguazú is a touristic city in the northeast of
Argentina located 300 km away from Posadas City, the Capital
City of the Province of Misiones. It has a population of more
than 35,000 and it is the fifth largest city in the Province,
after Posadas, Oberá, Eldorado and San Vicente. It limits with
Brazil and Paraguay through the concourse of Paraná and Iguazú
River which are the well-known Iguazu Falls only 18 kilometres
(11 mi) away from the city. As a result, the city has developed
its spectacular infrastructure around tourism. Being a
touristic place, it provides with one of the greatest exhibition
of water and forest existing on Earth: the fascinating Iguazú
Falls - in guaraní language Big Waters -. Another of the tourist
highlights include Las Tres Fronteras, where the Argentine,
Paraguayan and Brazilian borders convene. This area is a site
for artesan booths. In the complex La Aripuca, which a museum
with images of the jungle, the Mbororé, another museum, El
Parque Natural Municipal, of Luis Honorio Rolón which is the
city hall’s natural park, Güira Oga which a center for the
rehabilitation of birds. In the city, there is an international
Casino as well. From Puerto Iguazú, you can go on excursions to
Ciudad del Este, which is already Paraguay and where there is an
important crafts and electronics fair, or you could as even set
out on excursions to Brazil in order to get a different view of
the falls if you think it convenient. Among the most chosen
activities, the tourist go on excursions to Iguazú National Park
–World Natural Heritage by UNESCO- visiting its 275 waterfalls
and getting to know the out of the ordinary flora and fauna.
Puerto Iguazú is a place where nature, in its greatest
expression of splendor, will amaze you for sure. Gastronomy,
casinos and resorts is all you need to be able to enjoy this
exotic subtropical region in the Argentina’s Northeast .
Climate and Topography
Puerto Iguazú has a "Humid Subtropical" Temperatures
are warm in winter and hot in summer. There is no dry season and
rainfall is abundant the year round receiving more than 100 mm
(3.9 inches) of rain every month and record rainfalls during the
wettest month of November of more than 200 mm (7.9 inches)
average. Precipitation falls mostly during convective storms so
it is very likely that a sunny day can became stormy and with
scattered hail. Due to abundant rainfall, rainforests surrounds
the city of Puerto Iguazú and as a result this region has a
humid climate without dry season and its temperatures range from
20º C to 33º C in Summer while Winter is gentle and pleasant. It
is a jungle out there you can say. Temperatures above 104°F
(40°C) have been recorded in the summer and temperatures below
32°F (0°C) are extremely rare but have been recorded in winter.
It is important to mention that due to its high degree of
humidity and due to constant rain temperature variations are
minimum which causes clouds to increase but usually storms last
sometimes as little as minutes. Topographicaly speaking, Puerto
Iguazú is located in a plateau with red rocky land due to the
melaphyre decomposition rich in iron and having cliffs covered
by humus favoring the growth of an exuberant forest everywhere
you look.
Economy
Because of the fact that the city's numerous hotels
provide the most important source of jobs for its inhabitants,
the economy is centered around tourism. Many international
hotels have been constructed along the banks of the Iguazú
River. And there are many projects going as well. However,
international trade with Brazil through the city Foz do Iguaçu
is also growing fast and reinforcing the economic growth of the
region. In downtown Puerto Iguazú you will find banks, money
exchange agencies, bars, casinos, restaurants, clothes shops,
sportswear shops, hairdressers, discotecas, pubs, and a shopping
center mall near the international bridge.

Parque Nacional Iguazu
Created on
October 9, 1934 to preserve the biological diversity of the
subtropical rainforest and the dazzling scenery surrounding the
Falls, today considered one of the seven wonders of the world,
Iguazu National Park currently has an area of 163,46 acres
(66,148 hectares) that were declared World Natural Heritage in
1984. To preserve the Falls and its subtropical rainforest, two
National Parks were created: "Parque Nacional Iguazu" in
Argentina, and "Parque Nacional do Iguaçu" in Brazil.
Situated in the far northeast of the province of Misiones,
Argentina, this natural ecosystem protected area has abundant
regular rainfall and mild temperatures, creating a
dampness-laden, almost windless environment, due to the
luxuriant growth of vegetation. The soil of Iguazu National Park
is red and the vegetation is very dense and dazzling green. The
relief undulates up to 30 meters either way, and some banks of
the Iguazu reach 60 meters above sea level. Iguazu National Park
is part of the Misiones subtropical rainforest formation, with
trees whose heights range between 15 and 40 meters; a large part
of it, however, has suffered deforestation as civilization has
advanced. It harbors more than 400 species of birds, around
2,000 species of plants and an immeasurable world of insects,
which makes this one of the richest natural environments in
Argentina. The Park's climate is warm with average temperatures
of 15º C in winter and 26º C in January, and a relative humidity
ranging between 75% and 90%. The rains, with an annual average
of 2,000 mm, are caused by winds from the Atlantic. The steadily
high temperatures and humidity make this area an immense
greenhouse with all the essential conditions for the growth of
exuberant vegetation. Six plainly identifiable strata between
the soil and the tops of the tallest trees characterize this
sector of the rainforest.
