| No one really knows what
Intiwatana is. Some people think it was used as a calendar, a
sundial or an observatory. The archaeologists have also discovered
Intiwatanas in Cusco and Pisac. The view down to the Urubamba
River from here was really nice. |

| This stairway was all ONE
BIG ROCK! There were a few other stairs like this. There were a
lot of stairs to climb up the mountainside. My legs did get a
little tired... |

| Our guide led us to a
meteorite. These were used to grind and form the granite rocks that the
Incas used for building Machu Pichu. It was really smooth and looked
like it was melted when it came to earth. I tried to lift it but it was
super, super, super duper heavy! |

| We climbed up to the top of
Machu Picchu and found some alpacas. The alapca has shorter fur and
is taller than the llama. The Incas had alpacas, llamas and
vicuña. The vicuña was a very special animal. The robe of the
Inca King was made from the fur of a vicuña. |

| We found some Viscacha in
an Incan house where there was a pile of rocks. We watched them
for a few minutes. They look almost like rabbits but they are in
their own family and are rodents. Viscacha have a long bushy tail. |

School Notes...
Yale graduate and American explorer Hiram Bingham was led to the
"Lost City" of Machu Picchu in 1911 by a young Peruvian boy.
Hiram Bingham brought these ruins and the Incas to the attention of
the world. In their conquest of the Incas, the Spaniards had not known
of the existence of this mountain sanctuary and religious center. It
was a dwelling and learning place for students, astronomers, shamans
and kings. The ancient city of Machu Picchu is still lost somewhere
between the world of reality, myth and legend. Check
